As the Co-Founder & Co-CEO of Hilma, a natural remedies brand, Hilary Quartner knows the role optimal health plays in successful living. The New York-based company offers clean medicine cabinet staples that are always less than 1g of sugar. They’re an alternative to conventional supplements and over-the-counter products that often pack unnecessary and even harmful ingredients. Hilma products range from head and body relief remedies to immunity support. Hilary, alongside co-founders Lily Galef and Nina Mullen, created Hilma because they did not want to sacrifice doctor formulated, clinically studied and evidence-backed options when choosing a natural approach to their health.
Hillary shared with Carte how she’s staying healthy at home from her Brooklyn Heights apartment — from the supplements she’s taking to the meditation app she uses to the dutch oven she uses to make homemade soup that nourishes the mind and the soul.
Wellness
My most important immunity tips are…
1 — Diet & Hydration
2 — Sleep
3 — Stress Management
4 — Exercise
5 — Supplement where your diet falls short
Kitchen
Making soup is one of my greatest pleasures — I find it meditative to chop up veggies, and it’s pretty hard to mess up. Plus, I find after a while you realize all soups are pretty much variations on a theme (Italian, Indian, French, Moroccan style lentils, you name it.) It’s also an easy way to pack nutrients into your daily diet.
Sleep
Sleep is a critical part of maintaining a healthy immune system. Adults must have 7-9 hours (of actually being asleep, not just in bed). So do whatever you need to do to get there.
Decor
Maintaining a relaxing, stress-free space is important.
Plants are essential. I have a big bunch of eucalyptus by my door - I love to smell when I come in and out of my apartment. Sometimes I hang it in my shower to create the full at home spa experience.
We keep plants in every room; we get the big ones from the flower district in Manhattan, order smaller ones from The Sill, and pick up others as we see them and fall in love like at Plantshed in the East Village.
Bath
A clean and orderly bathroom is very important to me as it’s the first place I go in the morning and the last place before bed.
Organization & Cleaning
A decluttered space is a healthy space!
I always have lavender in my clothes drawers.
Home Workout
I have tried so many, but I’ve settled on using the Peloton app — it has everything from yoga to strength training to boot camps. I also love Megan Roup’s The Sculpt Society.
